| It is hard to believe that it has been almost 2 years since I last updated this site. Simply pathetic. In my defense, I have been busy as the VP of Product Development over at Blue Lava Wireless. Doing games for phones has been pretty interesting. It reminds me a lot of my old Apple ][ in terms of speed and storage space, but much improved graphics.
I have been keeping my Mac skills up by porting/developing a bunch of J2ME development tools in my free time. It has the added bonus of allowing me to do my BLW work on the Mac. Besides I needed to justify the purchase of a new Dual 2GHz G5. As soon as I figure out the licensing issues, I will be releasing the J2ME stuff here. I also have a couple of Mac-centric projects in various states of completion that I hope to release soon. My apologies to anybody that has sent email to the addresses on the contacts page. I was getting a completely unreasonable amount of junk mail to those addresses, so I shut them down. Unfortunately, I didn't bother to update the page or mention this anywhere on the site. Sorry about that. |

And now for something completely different...

| There is a new company starting up here in Hawai'i that will be slapping together games for 3G cellular phones. I have recently accepted a position as the head of development for the company. I'm not quite sure what this means for the Mac projects that I have been working on lately or even what I am going to do with Evolution Interactive "the company". I guess I will make up my mind after getting a few games (3G, not Mac) out the door. Ugh...why Java?!? | ||

More delusional rants

|
| Well, it looks like my current jaunt into the game dev world is just about complete. I have been spending a lot of time working on non-Mac titles recently, and I am growing a bit weary of it. I should have a small game title for the Mac out the door in the 1st quarter of this year (no, not that one).
I was looking around for some cool games to play on my Mac, and it really disgusted me that I couldn't find anything that I really liked. The commercial people seem to be under the impression that all games must be "3D rocket rides with guns blazing". A lot of shareware/freeware people think that any crap they slam together with realBASIC is a game and that they should be able to charge 25 bucks for it. Don't get me wrong, there are some people out there that are doing some really cool stuff, there just isn't enough of it. So, being the arrogant self-righteous bastard that I am, I decided to sit down and crank out some cool new games to show the world that I really deserve to be worshipped. Unfortunately, I have been thwarted by my desire to immerse myself deeply in the bosom of OSX. I went to do some layouts and prototype stuff in my favorite graphic editor, when I realized that I don't have a favorite one anymore. I couldn't find an OSX-native editor that did what I wanted it to do, and being in the upper-echelon of society, I don't use "classic" stuff. Hmmm...this could turn out to be a problem. I have been getting a bunch of questions about what I think about OSX (or at least I like to think that people would maybe consider asking me about it...ok, well maybe nobody talks to me anymore, but it's not my fault...I'm feeling lonely). Well, I have been using it on two of my main dev machines since 10.1 came out. I have to say that I really dig it overall, although I do have some pretty big gripes with it (I bet you didn't see that one coming). I have just about given up all desire to make OS9 stuff, with the only good reason being that a huge part of the market is still in it. For those of you keeping score about the events in my last two postings...well, I had a bit of a confrontation with the "client" where we got to exchange a few emails about the intricacies of C++ (and how they were screwing it up). I think that it was my first official "nerd fight", and looking back on the emails now, all I feel is that the combatants need to get outside more often and visit the real world. This entire event made me laugh so hard I almost wet myself. Haven't heard from the client since. |

I guess I pissed a few people off

| I never thought that anybody even read the ramblings that I posted here...well, I was wrong. I had a couple of clients contact me assuming that I was talking about their little gem...and challenging me to a boxing match in which I would be tied up and punched in the face repeatedly. I really like a challenge, but that doesn't sound like much fun.
So, in the spirit of making things right and groveling so as not to get my ass kicked, I am making the following statements:
Hmmm...I'm not sure if I just fixed things or if I just handed my opponent (err, client) a big stick to bludgeon me with. |

Some new stuff
|
9 october 2001
|
|
| OK, I admit that it has been way too long since I last updated this page, but I've been busy. I guess that it is ok for me to talk about what I have been up to since the products are now beginning to ship. Well, I have been working with Blue Planet Software on a development tool that is being used to create all future versions of Tetris and Tetris-like derivatives. I also created a cross platform engine that will be the core of all future Tetris titles on all platforms. The first product that is using this engine is the Game Boy Advance version of TetrisWorlds that was just released by THQ. Actually, the first version was for the Macintosh, but since it has not been released, I guess it doesn't count. The dev tool is now being used to help finish off the PC, Playstation2, GameCube and XBox versions.
As of late, I have been getting tired of looking at other peoples crappy code as I am porting it over to the Mac. So, I have decided to focus on creating my own crappy code. So, I got some sweet game designs together and am hard at work making my dysfuctional dellusions into reality. And just to put all you Mac-heads at ease about my recent jaunts into the console world, the new titles will all have Mac versions (although maybe only OSX versions). We are looking at putting the titles onto the PC and a couple of consoles, but my stuff will always be Mac-first. If there are any starving 2d/3d artists out there that want to get in on some cool projects, send me some e-mail (to the work address on the contact page). If you want, you can throw in some sample work, but don't make it too big (not over a meg or so). One other thing. I know that a lot of you a really looking for me to do the port of a certain series that I have worked on in the past. Well, we have been actively talking to you-know-who about the port and all parties want it to happen. I got a couple of source dumps from them already, but they are obviously rushing to get it out the door and are making a lot of bad decisions (code-wise) in the process. I have played the game a fair bit already, and I'm really not impressed. |

Status update
|
27 march 2001
|
|
| I have been getting a few e-mail wondering what I am up to. Well, I have spent the last several months writing some top-secret development tools and an engine for another game company. The engine is targeted mainly at the next-gen consoles (and Mac for dev reasons), but the dev tools are Mac only. No guarantees, but it is starting to look very likely that a Mac version of the final product (or a spin-off) will be coming out.
I have also bought a house in Hawai'i, so I will be spending the next couple of weeks packing and then cruising cross-country in the minivan with the family in tow. I'll be updating the site again when I am firmly planted in the middle of the Pacific. |
